Indie Publishing Stats

Updated 3/1/12

I finally broke down and put my numbers into a spreadsheet to make counting a little easier and more accurate.  This post will be simple.  But I want to take the time to thank everyone who has purchased one of my books, read it and gave a review.  I also want to give my heartfelt thanks to those authors who took the time to give me advice as I've taken this self publishing journey.  There are many, many authors who unselfishly shared their process and guided me, supported me and cheered with me when I reached a new milestone.

In February, I reached a new one.  In just  6 short months I've sold over 25,000 ebooks.  I released two new ebooks in February and I'm happy to say they did well.  I will be posting two sets of numbers.  The first set is for February sales at Barnes and Noble and Amazon.  The second set is for TOTAL of sales from Barnes and Noble, Amazon, and Smashwords and all outlets I have SW distribute to including Kobo, iTunes and Sony.

It's that time again when I get to crunch numbers and see how my books have sold.  January was a good month as sales held steady due to increased UK sales.   I've included sales in January for Amazon and Barnes and Noble only.   In going through my numbers I've decided that I need to break down and pull together a spreadsheet for all my sales since they include foreign locales and different vendors. As soon as I have a workable and accurate file together I will update the page will total sales to date.

One observation.  Despite being after Christmas and no longer being free, All I Want for Christmas is You continued to sell well in January at the higher rate of $2.99 (previously at 99 cents)  The numbers below are sales and do not include any free downloads.

January 2012 Sales (Amazon & Barnes and Noble)

All I Want for Christmas is You: 727

Nothing But Trouble: 510

The Knight and Maggie's Baby: 1699

The Marriage Contract: 1183

FATE with a Helping Hand BOX SET: 20

Total book sales for the month of January (Amazon and BN) - 4139

It’s time for another update of my Indie Publishing stats. These past few months have been good to me and I have my readers to thank for that. Thank you everyone who has downloaded one of my books, read it, given me a review or emailed me. (I do love hearing from readers so keep those emails coming!)

A bit about my journey as an Indie author. I’ve been traditionally published for over 12 years. Had I not had the rights to my backlist of books at this point in time I probably never would have Indie published. I enjoy working with my editor and publishing house and I love the books I write.

But these are exciting times for authors. I love that I am able to bring new life to an old book and introduce those stories to new readers. I was also able to release for the first time The Knight and Maggie’s Baby, a book that was an “almost sell” for two publishers and was ultimately rejected. The response I’m getting on that book is fabulous and I’m so glad that readers finally have a chance to read that story 12 years after I wrote it! (I’ve received more than a few emails asking me if there is going to be sequel for Cam’s story. I’ve been thinking… More on that later.)

I also write a bit outside of the box and look forward to being able to Indie publish some of those stories that don’t fit neatly into what other publishers are publishing right now or things that I’ve already published. Having said that, I will be releasing more Lisa Mondello books in 2012 (Keep an eye out in January for my Texas Hearts series) as well as begin to publish books under the L.A. Mondello pen name, both traditionally and independently. More on all that in the What’s New section of my blog, coming soon in 2012.

I chose to keep All I Want for Christmas is You for free in most outlets. I will be changing the price on that in 2012 to get ready for the release of the FATE WITH A HELPING HAND Box Set that will include All I Want for Christmas is You, The Marriage Contract and The Knight and Maggie’s Baby. As of today, there have been nearly 300,000 downloads, mostly free, of All I Want for Christmas is You. I have included below only the paid sales for All I Want for Christmas is You.

UPDATED December 1, 2011

As many of you know, I, like many other authors, have taken my backlist books that I hold the ebook rights to and have self-published them.  These are exciting times and I've had the benefit of learning loads from those authors who've self-published before me.  I raise my glass and give a huge thanks to all of you who have shared your experiences, your knowledge and your stats in an effort to help educate authors just starting out.

This is my contribution to the mix.  There are many other authors who are also sharing numbers.  I will add those links to the bottom of this post.

These stats only reflect Amazon and Barnes and Noble sales.  I do not have enough sales worth reporting for Smashwords and its distributors yet. I will update this page as I have more information in 2012.
